What follows is an incomplete list of jazz recorder players I have come across during my research. They don't play all the same way, of course: there are some jazz musicians, like Eddie Marshall and Benoît Sauvé, who are true and excellent jazz improvisers. But maybe they don't have the fine traditional recorder technique and sound that others, for example Evelyn Nallen or Nadja Schubert, exhibit.
On the other side, a true genius like Keith Jarrett doesn't seem (at least to me) to have created a piece of art with his recorder CD "Spirits": after all, you must explore and listen yourself! To help those of you who have yet to find their own taste in recorder jazz, here is a first draft of a very limited and essential discography:
  • Charles Fambrough (Joel Levine - Recorder), Keeper of the spirit, AudioQuest Music 1995
  • Rodney Waterman & Doug de Vries, Agua e Vinho, Carmo/ECM, 2000
  • Eddie Marshall, Holy Mischief, Ruddy Duck Records, 1999
  • Nadja Schubert, Yellow & Red, 2000, MR. D. MUSIC / NIWO MUSIC
  • Respectable Groove (Evelyn Nallen - Recorder), Mysterious Barracudas
  • Warren Kime, Recorder Jazz, 2003
Send me your reviews of these fine artists and CDs!
